I mean it is pretty common. Plus they wheels are fairly light. Titans are 17.8 and Torques are 19lbs.

Hell, even full on race cars have Rotas. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

900 is ~ 1/3 of my regular total car budget

I see nothing wrong with Rotas, unless you are building a track dedicated car. Do what you do man.

Wheels aint cheap if you want 17". Some days I wish I had a Miata, you can get a great set for like 600 dollars.

No shame in doing so. I actually think it's a bit silly to blow that much cash on a part that's so easily ruined and generally have pretty low resale value.

Granted, I did the same myself years ago. The weight loss did change the driving experience significantly and the wheels have survived until now, but I've been actively dodging potholes since they were put on.

It is not a dedicated track car, it is mostly a daily driver with one or two autocrosses a month. I might track the car, but maybe once a year.

I dodge potholes now anyway, they just hurt my back. They aren't going to be year round wheels though. I will probably use the OEM wheels as late fall/winter wheels and the Rotas as summer wheels(with summer tires obviously).

I might be a different kind of Jalop. I've never done anything with my cars in which the weight of the wheels would make a difference, and if someone had mentioned Rotas to me before I would have no idea what they were talking about nor will I probably remember after this post.

Why not 16's? When I pick up summer wheels, I think I'm going with 16's. I like the meaty tire look

Tire selection, 16s are pretty limited I think. I think 15s have many more option, but they don't fit on these cars.

If you google them you might. People say they break all the time. . . after some ridiculous situation, like taking a jump at 60 or hitting a curb at 40 or something.

It's all in the sizing. There are a lot of 225/50 tires, if you keep to a close-to-stock width.

If you wanna go wide, it gets a little tough. There are some options at 245/45, but almost no 255's that will fit.

Kinja'd!!! N/A POWAAAHH > YSI-what can brown do for you
01/27/2014 at 12:33

Kinja'd!!!1

Notice how most of these failures are 8 years old and on honda forums?

I'm sure Rota has improved their quality, considering they have gotten lots of attention lately.

Also, that story you shared is bs, 2 wheels would on break like that if you lost traction and slid into a curb.

Kinja'd!!! YSI-what can brown do for you > Tekamul
01/27/2014 at 12:34

Kinja'd!!!0

Well, 245/40 is my planned tire width. 255's rub on stock suspension which I will be keeping for some time.

I personally don't like the way the 16s look, which is one reason I am going with 17s. Although, 16s will probably be really light!

I think you're on the right track. You don't need to get uber fancy wheels for super big piles of money. Just get reasonably light weight wheels that won't explode and are the size you want.

From your various posts I'm assuming you want to run some kind of black or dark gray light weight 17x9" wheel with 5x100 bolt pattern and +42 to +45 offset.

Forged wheels are the best. They're expensive. Some lighter weight cast wheels if they're made with fancy casting processes are still durable and cheap(er) than forged. That's why you see anecdotal stories about the occasional Rota or Kosei light weight cast wheels having problems. Most are probably fine.

If you really want that piece of mind, you can:

1. Spend a little more on something that uses a more-fancy casting technology, like Enkei RPF1. Tire Rack has the 17x9s for $279 each which isn't bad.

2. Go for a cheaper but few pounds heavier wheel that will take more abuse than something both cheap and super light. Like the Enjei Kojin at 21 lbs.

Kinja'd!!!0

That was exactly my point, instead of saving money with Rotas, go down a size. The Enkei's pictured are only $165 a piece. But I realize most modern cars were designed with a larger wheel look in mind.

Running 16's definitely looks decidedly retro, but that's the way I'll go.

I can't find Rota Torques in 17x8 5x100 for any offset other than 48 - the BRZ rear wheels already look sunken stock +48...

And Rotas (for some reason) are damn hard to find in Canada.

I would love to buy RPF1s but I just can't stand the way they look. Super functional but not super sexy.

And I want a 17x9 with a +35mm or a +40mm offset. I would get the Kojin, but I want something lighter than stock or as light. It is becoming fairly difficult for me to select a wheel cause of how damn picky I am.

Right, it looked like the broke it in with a hammer. It was ridiculous.

I think I am going to bite and buy a set in the summer. I will check for cracks every month or so just to be safe, but I don't think anything will happen, considering how many people run it without problems.

Sounds like a plan. I was referring more to the stuff like Volks and BBS ... don't know how people drive around on those without worrying all the time.

Probably looking at a set of Rotas for the girl's car once the tires wear out. The prev owner put some pretty hideous wheels on it ...

Buy them. Any wheel can break, and the internets don't understand that they will, if you run them into crubs and fentses.

I had a set on my Miata, on crappy, potholed, expansion-jointed DC roads and never had a lick of a problem. Not the same for my "super high quality" stock Racing Hart wheels.

Thanks - I looked into that - the only option I've found thus far is et 30 17x9, which I'm concerned will rub (I will stay on stock suspension, and would prefer to keep my tires 225 max)

Maybe they have fat stacks? Cause I know I would be worried about even chipping the wheels paint. Some people pay nearly 10 grand for wheels like HRE or PUR. Stupid I say!

Another option would be going with 16s, but I like to keep a similar diameter to stock for style reasons :D

Those won't rub. My friend ran a +35mm 17x9, and his car didn't rub even when he added camber. This was with stock suspension as well. The 30mm option should be good but it might poke a bit. You can drop the car and it might work.
